History
Music is a medium everyone understands. The founding of the Magdeburg University Choir proves that once again. In September 1993, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Otto von Guericke University, Prof. Wolfram Neumann, initiated the choir and brought together students and staff of all faculties of the university as well as Magdeburg citizens who were interested in music.
The first conductor of the choir was Günther Hoff, once the cantor of the Magdeburg Cathedral for almost a quarter of a century. With his experience, he created an ensemble which is influenced by young and old voices till this day. In 2008, he passed the baton to Tobias Eger. He had become the choir's favorite successor, owing to his experience with chamber music as cantor and organist of St Bartholomew in Zerbst/Anhalt and his joint concerts with the choir.
The University Choir is an open, changing ensemble. The coming and going of OVGU students who join the choir temporarily leads to a varying composition and number of members. Between 50 and 80 men and women aged 18 to 80 years meet regularly for rehearsals.
Sacred music is an integral part of the University Choir's repertoire. The close collaboration with the choir of the Premonstratensian Order in Magdeburg led to the invitation to use the newly built community centre of St. Petri church for choir rehearsals. The desire to realize the cultivation of traditional and modern culture in church and society is the basis of this fruitful cooperation. A choir committee was founded in 2009 to organize and promote choir activities. The registered association Förderverein des Universitätschores Magdeburg e.V. provides financial and organizational support to the choir since its founding.
